Translation Poem: The interpreter has your back.

Well I’m nervous now as I stand
A man alone on a platform,
200 hungry young minds
Who just don’t speak my norms

How will I get them to change
Their understanding at all?
Will my main message
On deaf ears fall?

Wait, there’s a booth in the back

The red light’s reassuring glow,
I see 200 headsets engaged
I’m ready to share what I know.

Film Names in Mongolian

Translation can be an interesting and tricky process. Have you ever considered, for example, the translation of film names into other languages? You may assume that the title is easily translatable but, of course, there may not always be a direct translation or the translation may lose meaning. Therefore, translators may opt for a more 'loose' translation, keeping the overall meaning, but definitely not a direct translation.

The Fast and Furious  films were launched in Mongolia under the title 'Crazy Fast' (Галзуу хурд):

The Incredibles 2 opened in cinemas here in June, but under the title СУПЕР ГЭР БҮЛ 2 ("Super ger bul 2"), which directly translates as "Super Family 2".

The Fast and Furious  films were launched in Mongolia under the title 'Crazy Fast' (Галзуу хурд):

While Wonder Woman had the simple title of 'Courage'  (Зоригon some Mongolian images.

Happy Death Day was released under the Mongolian title of 'Cursed Birth Day' (Хараалт төрсөн өдөр).

Zootopia was translated as 'City of Animals' (Амьтдын хот). The film was released as Zootropolis in the UK, bringing the translated title closer to the meaning of this version of the film's title.

We hoped you enjoyed reading about the translation of films names into Mongolian. Please keep visiting our blog, and we will bring you more very shortly.

Translation Jokes

A selection of new and old jokes and puns related to translation and interpreting to brighten your day. We hope you enjoy them. Please feel free to add your own jokes in comments.

-----------------------------

A translator walks into his boss's office.
"I'm sorry Michael, but you're fired."
"I'm lost for for words" said Michael
"I know" replied his boss. "That's why you're fired".

Interpreters from the past, present and future got into an argument.
It was a tense exchange of words.

The King of Dogs meets the Queen of Cats at the annual canine/feline summit.
During the meeting, the dog interpreter politely interrupts his king:
"Sorry sir, I don't know how to translate that. They have no word for 'fetch' in their language".

Thesaurus walks into a bar / pub / inn / hostelry / public house / tavern...........

How many translators does it take to change a light bulb?
Depends on the context.......

A bad translator walks into a bar.
Get's soapy.

A legal translator walks into a bar.
Passes the exam.

Donald Trump walks into a bar. The interpreter walks out.

Two consecutive interpreters bump into each other while walking in the street.
"After you" says one.
"No, after you" says the other.

How many proofreaders does it take to change a light blub?

The Mongolian Currency and Transliteration Problems

The official acronym of the Mongolian currency is MNT. The M is for Mongolian. The N is for National. So far so good, but when we get to the T it can become confusing, as there are several variations of the word in English, including:

Tugrik
Tugrug
Togrog
Tögrög
Tughrik

Indeed, if you type any of these into your search engine, you will find matches for them all from various sites including currency exchanges, banks and Mongolian companies, although Tugrik seems to be the most popular (if you type any of the others into Google, it will ask if you mean Tugrik).

The Bank of Mongolia sets out on their currency page that the national currency is the Togrog, but other variations of the spelling can be found on other pages and documents on their site. A search of the websites of the major Mongolian banks show that different spellings are often used. It would appear that even in the banking industry in the country there is no universal application of one version.

We conducted a poll on the Translation and Interpreting in Mongolia Facebook group to find out which version people most used and, as you can see from the results below, Tugrik was the most popular, followed by Tugrug. The Bank of Mongolia choice of Togrog was less popular. 49% of respondents opted for Tugrik, while 41.5% selected Tugrug. Only 7.5% agreed with the version used by the Bank of Mongolia.

So why is there such a variation, and no universal standard?

The main issue lies in transliteration. The Mongolian word in Cyrillic is Төгрөг. The strict transliteration into the Latin alphabet would be Togrog. However, in Mongolian the vowel sounds in word Төгрөг sounds like they would be better served by the letter U in English, making Tugrug a better fit verbally. Another reason could lie in the transliteration of the word from the traditional Mongolian script, before the Cyrillic alphabet was introduced, which would explain the enduring preference for Tugrik.

It seems the easiest solution to this issue is use the officially recognised and universally accepted acronym of MNT in documents to avoid any confusion.

Double Check Translation - Doing Things Differently

At Double Check Translation, we pride ourselves on doing things a little differently to many international language service providers. We always strive to be the best we can, deliver the highest quality translation and provide our customers with a superior service.

Firstly, we made a conscious decision to concentrate on Mongolian-English and English-Mongolian translation, interpreting and related services. The reason for this was to make sure that we could offer the highest quality services across all professional areas. We have a team of experienced, dedicated professionals with, not only substantial translation experience, but also a background in their own professional area. This means each translation we receive is given to a member of our team with the skills, knowledge and experience to effectively understand and translate the specialist vocabulary, technical terminology, context and content of each document to the highest level.

Many translation agencies aim to secure the translation job from a client first, and then try to find the cheapest freelance translators they can find to complete the task. Often, if the language pair is a new or unfamiliar one, they will have no way of testing the translator or editing/proofreading the work effectively.

At Double Check Quality control is our highest priority. Firstly, we only work with members of our translation team. We never outsource translation to unknown freelance translators. All members of our team have been through our recruitment processes, been trained in our systems and of course meet the highest standards of confidentiality and data security. Currently all members of our team have worked with us for between and one and six years. Therefore clients not only know that their documents will genuinely be translated by experienced translators, but also that their documents will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

For Double Check, treating our team with the highest level of respect for the amazing work that they do is essential. Many international agencies are solely focused on saving as much money as possible on outsourcing translation. Agencies often pay 30, 60 or even 90 days after invoice (at the end of the month, which means the translator could receive payment up to 120 days after completing the job). Some even charge a transaction fee to transfer payment to the translator, while some agencies use discount schedules to discount the fee paid to translators over a certain number of pages, as recognition for ‘rewarding’ them with extra work. Many impose harsh payment reductions for errors in translation – not a means of ensuring quality, but simply to reduce their outgoings as much as possible.

At Double Check Translation, all our translators are paid twice monthly (in accordance with Mongolian standards). No reductions or fees are applied to payments. We work directly with our translators to work to identify and eliminate errors, by providing advice, feedback, and copies of edited/proofread translations etc., with the aim of ensuring the highest quality translation going forward, rather than punishing them harshly for mistakes made. This is one reason why we have such a brilliant and trusted team of translators who have worked with us for many years.

Translation agencies will often claim that such practices highlighted above are an “industry standard”. At Double Check Translation, we do not accept such “standards” in our working practices, and we aim to work in a way that recognizes the brilliant contribution of our team, while at the same time delivering the highest quality services to our clients.

Double Check Translation, the Mongolian language services provider you can trust.
